Murphy police chief encourages safety for pedestrians

Murphy Police Chief Arthur “Trey” Cotten emphasized the dangers of crossing the street without paying proper attention. “Serious injuries can result from carelessness and inattention. People crossing streets can be extremely vulnerable,” according to the Collin County cop.
He also commented on the state’s lack of rules criminalizing distracted driving. “Other than in school zones, we do not have what’s become known as a ‘distracted driver’ ordinance on the books. So while it is not against the law to talk on a phone or interact with a mobile device while driving, we strongly encourage drivers to put away their devices or use a hands-free system while behind the wheel.” Cotten further advised motorists: “attention to surroundings, for both the driver and the pedestrian, will go a long way in preventing accidents. Of course, wearing bright colors while walking during the day, and reflective or light colored clothing at night are extremely helpful.”
