The American Veterinary Medical Association reports that the most common dog bite victims are children. Furthermore, it is estimated that 4.7 million Americans will suffer a dog bite this year. Each year, around 800,000 people need medical treatment for their dog bites. Dog bites account for about 12 deaths each year. In 2005, insurance companies paid $317.2 million for dog bite liability claims, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

The Cleveland Clinic details how a dog’s smaller teeth can tear skin while their front teeth can compress tissue, resulting in a jagged wound. A primary concern surrounding dog bites is infection, which can require victims to be hospitalized and receive antibiotics. If the wound is severe enough, a doctor may recommend that the victim receive stitches. The Clinic reports that feral and unvaccinated dogs can transfer rabies, so it is important to know information about the dog who bit you. In addition to this, “50% of dog bites introduce bacteria, including staphylococcus, streptococcus, and pasteurella, as well as capnocytophaga.”

Public education website DogsBite reported that from 2005-2016, dogs were the cause of 392 American deaths. Of those fatalities, 72% were caused by Pit Bulls (which only make up around 6% of the dog population in this country). Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and American Bulldogs accounted for 84% of dog-related fatalities in 2016. Data from 2016 says that children under the age of nine years old accounted for 42% of fatalities, and adults aged 30 and over accounted for 58% of deaths. In the same year, there were more female victims than male victims. Small children aged three to six days old accounted for 31% of the deaths of children.

In 2016, family dogs inflicted 45% of all deaths, and 86% of those family dogs were Pit Bulls. A total of 55% of fatal Pit Bull attacks involved a family or household member, while 45% of victims were non-family. Criminal charges only occurred in 6% of deadly dog attacks.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that there were 28,079 dog bite repair reconstructive procedures in 2015. In another article, the organization stated that there are 4.5 million dog bites each year in the United States, and around 20% of those bites become infected. From the years 1993 to 2008, hospitalizations related to dog bites increased by 86% in the United States. In rural areas, dog bite emergency department visits are four times more common than in urban areas. People who have two or more dogs have a five times greater risk of suffering a dog bite than adults who do not have a household dog.

From 2005 to 2013, there were 34 fatalities related to dog bites in Texas, which is more than any other state. Of the deaths recorded in Texas, 18% resulted in a criminal charge. Children aged 11 and younger made up 68% of the deaths, and within that group, 52% were two years old or younger.
