Corpus Christi, TX – 2 Killed in Fatal Head-On Collision on FM 70
Corpus Christi, TX (May 25, 2019) On the night of May 24th, a fatal head-on collision happened on FM 70 and County Road 73. A 2008 Ford Fusion was headed westbound on FM 70 while a 2015 Mercedes was driving in the opposite direction. The Mercedes tried to swerve out of the way but ended up colliding head-on with the Fusion. The collision happened at around 11:00 p.m.
When emergency crews arrived to help, they found five found occupants inside of the Fusion, which included a 2-year-old passenger named Haven Sandoval and an 18-year-old passenger named Mario Alberto Benavides. Sandoval and Benavides both sustained serious injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital via two HALO-Flight emergency helicopters. Sadly, they both died at the hospital despite life-saving measures.
This accident is still under investigation as investigators determine causation and liability.
Our thoughts are with the families of Haven Sandoval and Mario Alberto Benavides as they grieve over their losses.
Head-On Collisions in Texas
In 2015, Corpus Christi had approximately 2,446 vehicle collisions. When head-on collisions occur late at night in rural areas, the cause is often drivers being under the influence or drowsy. Other causes could be poorly lit roads, which makes it difficult for drivers to discern which lane is the correct one.
