San Antonio, TX – Man Killed in Bicycle Accident on U.S. Highway 181 South

San Antonio, TX (June 23, 2019) On the morning of June 22nd, a fatal bicycle accident happened in the 11700 block of U.S. Highway 181 South. A 2016 Jeep Renegade struck a man who was pushing his bicycle across the lanes to reach the opposite side of the highway. The impact pushed the bicyclist to the right side of the highway. The accident took place at approximately 10:16 a.m.

When the paramedics and other emergency crews arrived, they found the man lying on the highway unresponsive. Sadly, despite efforts to try and help him, he died at the scene.

Fortunately, the driver of the Jeep remained at the scene.

The police are still investigating to determine what led up to the fatal accident, but they don’t believe alcohol or distractions were contributing factors.

Our thoughts are with the grieving family of the deceased bicyclist.

Bicycle Accidents in Texas

San Antonio, TX - Man Killed in Bicycle Accident on U.S. Highway 181 SouthDespite Texas government enforcing a safe passing ordinance in 2013, more bicycle accidents are still occurring annually. Sadly, it’s easy for bicycle accidents to result into fatalities because of the lack of bodily protection bicyclists wear, which is why the ordinance was passed in the first place. The ordinance requires all vehicles to give bicyclists at least three feet of space when passing, or else they should not pass. Sadly, because drivers still commit negligent acts, they risk accidentally taking the lives of bicyclists.
