Austin, TX – One Man In Custody After Car Accident On South Congress

Austin, TX (July 7, 2019) – One man is in custody after a brief chase on South Congress Avenue Sunday evening, July 7th.

Police responded to a car accident at the intersection of South Congress and Ben White Boulevard around 2:20 p.m. Once the police arrived, one of the vehicles involved fled the scene. APD pursued the vehicle until the chase ended at the intersection of Congress Avenue and Sheraton Avenue.

When officers attempted to make contact with the driver, 36-year-old Nathan Barrera, the suspect refused to get out of the vehicle. As police requested he exit the vehicle, it appeared as though Barrera was reaching for a weapon, at which time SWAT was called to the scene. The suspect eventually exited the vehicle and was taken into custody. One weapon was located, during a search of the vehicle.

Barrera was found to be wanted on several felony warrants.  Charges for this incident will include failure to stop and render aid, evading in a vehicle, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

The victims in the crash sustained minor injuries.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
