Grimes County, TX – Victims Injured in TX-6 Accident Identified

Grimes County, TX (November 5, 2019) – A drunk driving accident on Texas Highway 6 left a firefighter and officer injured.

On November 3, emergency crews responded to the scene of a motor vehicle accident on State Highway 6. According to reports, a motor vehicle accident occurred along the roadway, just south of Navasota, claiming the life of one victim.

As the Texas Department of Public Safety investigated the incident, a vehicle operated by Grimes County Sheriff’s Office deputy Swank Backhus was position behind the crash. At the same time, Navasota firefighter David Kearny was positioned nearby to assist with directing traffic.

As crews secured and investigated the scene, 20-year-old Avery Jimenez failed to yield to the emergency lights. As a result, Jimenez’s vehicle collided with the rear-end of the patrol vehicle. The impact of the collision caused the vehicle to roll forward and strike Firefighter Kearny. Backhus was ejected from the patrol vehicle.

Both Backhus and Kearny were transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.

Jimenez was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of intoxication assault and possession of marijuana.

At this time, the incident remains under investigation.

Our thoughts are with Swank Backhus, David Kearny, and their families at this time.
