FDA Investigates Homeopathic Teething Tablets and Gels
The FDA is continuing to analyze adverse events regarding homeopathic teething products in children who were given these products since a 2010 safety alert was issued. Homeopathic teething tablets and gels have not been approved by the FDA and the agency states that it is not aware of any proven health benefits of these products.
Homeopathic teething products include:
- Hyland’s Baby Teething Tablets,
- Hyland’s Baby Nighttime Teething Tablets,
- Hyland’s Baby Teething Gel,
- Orajel Naturals Teething Pain Relief,
- CVS Infants’ Teething Tablets, and
- CVS Pharmacy Homeopathic Infants’ Teething Liquid.
Hyland’s responded to the FDA advisory on October 1, 2016, stating that the company was “confident that Hyland’s Baby Teething Tablets remain safe” and assuring consumers that Hyland’s was fully cooperating with the FDA inquiry. Hyland’s also acknowledged that its products contained Belladonna and released a video to help consumers “better understand homeopathically-prepared belladonna.”
Notwithstanding Hyland’s initial response, the company discontinued the distribution of it’s teething medications in the United States just ten days later, on October 11, 2016. In a letter to moms and dads, Hyland’s reasserted it’s confidence that its products were safe for use, but cited confusion among parents and contradictory information in as contributors to the decision to halt distribution in the United States.
Adverse event reports indicate that homeopathic remedies for teething may have caused injuries including seizures, shortness of breath, vomiting, constipation and possibly death. The FDA has not conclusively determined that homeopathic products were the direct cause of these adverse events and did not specifically identify any of the manufactures or distributors of homeopathic teething products in the warning to consumers.
