Dallas Roundup Lawyers

Agrochemical and agricultural biotech company Monsanto first released its Roundup product in 1974. Since then, the herbicide has spread around the globe and has become one of the most popular tools in the agricultural industry.

However, various studies have linked Roundup to developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). The toxicity of Roundup is linked to its key ingredient, glyphosate. Monsanto had a patent on glyphosate from 1974 until 2000, when its hold finally expired.

Thousands of individuals are now filing lawsuits against Monsanto, alleging that their Roundup product has led to the development of cancer and other serious illnesses.

If you worked in an industry where you were consistently exposed to Roundup – or even lived in an area where Roundup was constantly used – and have been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or other forms of cancer, you may be able to file a claim against Monsanto. And the knowledgeable Roundup lawsuit attorneys of The Benton Law Firm can help you fight back against those that did you wrong.

What Makes Roundup So Dangerous?

The main cause of concern in Roundup products is a compound known as glyphosate.

Glyphosate has been used for decades as a herbicide to kill unwanted plants and weeds and is used on a wide range of crops, including fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Roundup was used on private, public, and commercial properties all throughout the United States.

While glyphosate-containing Roundup products have been used for decades, it wasn’t until recently that a connection between glyphosate and cancer was made. Organizations, such as the World Health Organization, have conducted independent studies showing that individuals exposed to high levels of glyphosate-containing Roundup face an increased risk of contracting non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

As a result of these studies, several major U.S. cities have banned or restricted the use of the herbicide, along with 17 countries in Africa, Asia, Central America, and Europe. As of now, the United States still allows the use of glyphosate.

Roundup products still being sold in the U.S. which contain glyphosate include:

  • Roundup Ready-to-Use Weed & Grass Killer III
  • Roundup Precision Gel
  • Roundup Ready-to-Use Extended Control Weed & Grass Killer Plus Weed Preventer II
  • Roundup Weed & Grass Kill Concentrate

What the Research Says About Glyphosate’s Link to Cancer

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) was one of the first organizations to label glyphosate as a “probable human carcinogen.” The research included a review of multiple studies on the effects of glyphosate on workers in certain industries, such as the agricultural industry. The evidence suggested that individuals with higher exposure to the herbicide experienced higher incidents of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

It is believed that glyphosate also causes DNA damage in human cells.

However, in opposition to several studies, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that glyphosate is not carcinogenic and does not pose a risk to public health when used as intended.

Still, several studies say otherwise, including:

  • A Swedish study in the International Journal of Cancer noted that glyphosate exposure increased the risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma within 10 years.
  • The International Journal of Epidemiology reported a “few moderate associations between glyphosate and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
  • A meta-analysis in the Mutation Research/Reviews in Mutation Research found a “compelling link” between glyphosate-based herbicides and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
  • The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has also noted a higher rate of NHL in farming communities due to the use of herbicides and pesticides.

While the EPA has set its stance, more and more evidence is building that supports the notion that glyphosate – and by relationship, Roundup – can cause cancer.

Individuals Most at Risk of Excessive Roundup Exposure

Roundup was used in a wide range of industries and by thousands of workers. For decades, the herbicide was the go-to product for the agricultural, landscape maintenance, and groundskeeping services industries.

The individuals who are most at risk of high-level exposure to Roundup and other glyphosate-containing herbicides include:

  • Agricultural Workers
  • Groundskeepers
  • Landscapers
  • Farm Workers
  • Garden Center Employees
  • Nursery Employees
  • Individuals with Personal Gardens
  • Individuals Tending to Community Gardens

Even if an individual did not have direct contact with Roundup, they could still be affected. Individuals living close to farming communities, commercial farms, or large properties where Roundup was frequently used could be susceptible to damages caused by the herbicide.

How Exposure to Roundup Happens

Individuals exposed to Roundup and other glyphosate-containing herbicides generally come into contact with the substance in the following ways:

  • Skin Contact: Individuals working with Roundup may need to mix and apply the herbicide and clean up any equipment used to spray the herbicide. Skin contact generally occurs in these situations when an accidental spill occurs or during application when the wind may blow the substance back onto the individual. Without proper clothing and safety gear, the risk of exposure is high.
  • Exposure Through Inhalation: When individuals working with glyphosate are not provided the appropriate safety gear, there is a high probability that they may be consistently exposed to the chemical through inhalation when applying the product.
  • Accidental Ingestion: Accidental ingestion can occur when an individual handling Roundup fails to properly wash their hands before eating, drinking, or smoking. In certain instances, the individual may even accidentally swallow the substance if the herbicide is placed in an unlabeled foot or water container.
  • Take-Home Exposure: Individuals working with Roundup could potentially take home the chemical residue on their clothing and shoes, which can lead to them exposing their loved ones.

While a single exposure to a small amount of Roundup will generally not cause any major health issues, the continued absorption of the chemical over long periods of time is of cause for concern.

Did you or a loved one use Roundup regularly? Have you been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma? You may have the right to file a claim against the negligent company that caused you harm. What to Know About Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a cancer that originates in the white blood cells – lymphocytes – within the body’s immune system. Healthy lymphocytes will die and give way to new ones. However, when suffering from NHL, the white cells do not die but continue dividing.

Over time these growths can turn into tumors with serious health consequences. Because the cancer tends to begin in the lymph system and tissue, there are certain areas to pay attention to, including:

  • Lymph Nodes: Sites in the chest, abdomen, and pelvis areas.
  • Spleen: Located on the left side of the body beneath the ribs.
  • Bone Marrow: Tissue within the bones also contains lymph cells.
  • Thymus: A small organ located in front of the heart.
  • Adenoids and Tonsils: Lymph tissue located behind the throat.
  • Digestive Tract: The stomach, intestines, and other organs can contain lymph cells in their lining.

Alongside tenderness and swelling, some additional signs to be aware of include:

  • Fever
  • Heavy night sweats
  • Tiredness
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Severe itchiness
  • Red patches on the skin
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Coughing or shortness of breath
  • Headaches
  • Cognitive issues
