2-car crash on FM 779 near Quitman kills 1, hurts 1

WOOD CO., TX – A 69-year-old woman died, and a 17-year-old went to the hospital Sunday after a wrong-way collision in Wood County, reports The Gilmer Mirror.

The incident happened around 6:15 p.m., four miles southwest of Quitman on FM 779, which is near Mineola.

Police say a westbound vehicle veered into the eastbound lane of FM 779 and collided head-on with another car.

Medics transported the 17-year-old wrong-way driver to UT Health Hospital in Quitman. The extent of her injuries is unclear.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle, identified as 69-year-old Frances H. Williams, died at the scene of the accident.

A full investigation is underway.
