BP agent dies following head-on crash on FM 70 in Nueces County

NUECES COUNTY, TX – The person who died last Monday night, September 16, following a head-on collision near Bishop has been identified as a Kingsville Border Patrol agent, reports CBS 19.

The fatal wreck occurred on a stretch of FM-70 near County Road 67, in an area east of Bishop and southwest of Corpus Christi. It was first recorded at around 8:37 p.m.

According to preliminary information collected at the scene, the agent was driving a 1998 Lexus ES eastbound on FM 70 when the other vehicle collided head-on with a black vehicle being driven westbound by a woman. Investigators later learned that the other vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction for a time.

The impact of the crash left both vehicles trapped in their cars, necessitating safe extractions from responding crews. While HALO-Flight was called to quickly get the patients to an area hospital, they were ultimately both taken by ambulance to a Nueces County hospital.

Officials confirmed that the driver of the Lexus, identified as a 46-year-old Corpus Christi resident who was a Kingsville Border Patrol agent of nearly 21 years, had been on their way to work at the time of the crash. He later succumbed to his injuries.

The other driver, a 39-year-old woman, was said to have suffered injuries following her safe removal from a vehicle, but was said to have been “alert and talking.”

Part of the highway may have been shut down for a time as crews worked to clear the scene.

No charges have been disclosed at this time. The Corpus Christi Highway Patrol Office continues to investigate.
