Driver of stolen ambulance injured in crash at Rusk gas station
RUSK, TX – A man was injured Thursday afternoon after stealing an ambulance in Lufkin and later crashing it into a gas pump at a station in Rusk, reports KETK.
The incident happened just after 1:11 p.m. at Kim’s Convenience Store, which is located off of US-69 at 1580 Dickinson Drive in Rusk.
Police say a family member had taken the driver to St. Luke’s Health-Memorial Hospital in Lufkin for unknown reasons. Rather than staying at the hospital, the man stole an ambulance and led officers on a chase from Lufkin to Rusk.
The man then crashed the ambulance into a gas pump, at which point the vehicle overturned.
Medics airlifted the driver to the hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.
Police say he will face charges when he is released from the hospital.
A full investigation is underway.
