DUI driver rear-ends, fatally injures deputy at TX-48 and Marine Way

BROWNSVILLE, TX – A deputy constable died on Monday after a two-vehicle crash along the highway in south-central Cameron County, reports Valley Central.

The accident happened around 6:45 p.m. on TX-48, or the Brownsville-Port Isabel Highway, near Marine Way Road on the far northeast side of Brownsville.

Police say the deputy had parked his cruiser along TX-48 while assisting with an earlier collision. Before he could leave the scene, a Chevy Silverado struck the rear end of the cruiser. Authorities say the driver of the Chevy was likely intoxicated and distracted at the time of the wreck.

The deputy, identified as Cameron County Precinct 1 Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia, died after transport to an area hospital.

Medics transported the driver of the Chevy to the hospital with non-critical injuries. Officials say he faces multiple charges, including Intoxication Manslaughter and Causing Death to a Police Officer.

A full investigation is underway.
